Maria Valfi is the daughter of wealthy merchant Valfi, who is unjustly accused in a trial for some uncovered checks. The plaintiff's lawyer in the trial is Dimitris Alexiadis, who is an arrogant lawyer. Valfis commits suicide in court and Maria believes that the lawyer is responsible for her father's death. At her father's grave, Maria swears an oath of hatred against the young lawyer.
