Miss Sophie is in financial distress. Her solution: She has five men compete for her heart: Mr. Pommeroy, Sir Toby, Mr. Winterbottom, Admiral von Schneider and Count Szabos. The already tricky plan gets completely out of control when Miss Sophie's childhood sweetheart, the butler's son James, appears.

James, the Butler's son skips a duel to the death to support Miss Sophie in her "Bachelorette" campaign. When the five marriage candidates arrive, each shows his very special temperament. Tension mounts amid etiquette, vanity, and petty taunts. Miss Sophie and James grow closer again, but Sophie's plan remains on track.

Miss Sophie invites the gentlemen on a dream date to Ascot: horse races, strawberry punch, high stakes. At Ascot, Miss Sophie experiences another financial setback. James gets on the trail of a rotten game and ends up exposing one of the marriage candidates as a cheater.

Admiral von Schneider organizes a one-on-one date for Miss Sophie, which is anything but conventional. Between questionable "medicine" and disarming confessions, the gentlemen show their true colors. In the end, one of the marriage candidates draws conclusions and throws in the towel.

Then there were only two! For his dream date, one bachelor takes the group to France, to the “Village of Truth.” The village lives up to its promise—Miss Sophie and James confront their feelings, and one marriage candidate makes a surprising confession.

After the trip to France, the way seems clear for the remaining bachelor. But he also has a lot of skeletons in his closet, and in the end, it's not just about the beginning of a great love, but also about life and death.
