A series of murders shakes a religious Laestadian community in the Northern Finnish town of Varjakka. Criminal investigators Sanna Tervo and Lauri Räihä are sent to investigate the case. For Sanna, posting is a job among others, while Lauri has to face his former community.
Year 1999. The upcoming millennium is a cause for concern in both, the secular world and the Laestadian community of Varjakka, where a married couple is found dead in the kitchen of their home. Senior Constable Jussi Ritola of the Varjakka local police takes the case, but it throws his personal life into chaos.
Lauri Räihä and Sanna Tervo return to Varjakka when the village's ex-police chief is found murdered in the woods.
